Will DIRECTV Add More HD Channels In 2013?
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (October 16, 2013) - Editor's Note: TV's Answer Man, aka Swanni, takes your questions regarding how to best use the latest products and services in TV technology. If you have a question about TV technology, ask TV's Answer Man by sending an e-mail to swann@tvpredictions.com

Q.  DIRECTV was adding HD channels pretty regularly for awhile, but not so recently. Do you expect it to add more high-def this year? -- Jon, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Jon, DIRECTV actually added four HD channels in mid-August, including Playboy and QVC. But I hear you. If you love High-Definition TV -- and who doesn't? -- you want everything to be in HD.

DIRECTV now claims to have roughly 190 channels in high-def, although like other TV providers, the satcaster may be inflating that number slightly with part-time channels and channels that can only be viewed in certain markets. But I think it's fair to say that DIRECTV has done a good job of adding HD channels in the last year or so.

Still, there are quite a few HD networks that DIRECTV has not added, including Epix; Fox Movie Channel; the new Esquire channel; NASA; the Military Channel; Al Jazeera; Sundance; Game Show Network; the Pac 12 Network; MAVTV; Reelz; Pivot; and several others.

I suspect that DIRECTV will wait until it launches its new satellite in 2014 before it starts adding HD channels in bunches again. The satcaster's satellite space may be getting close to capacity.

But you might see one or two new HD channels before year's end. If I was betting, I would say Sundance is most likely and, in my personal view, the most worthy.
