DIRECTV Now to Launch 'Cloud DVR' Service
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (July 13, 2017) -AT&T plans to launch a ‘cloud DVR’ that will eventually allow subscribers to DIRECTV Now, DIRECTV, and even the telco’s U-verse service to store programming on company servers rather than set-tops.

In a press release, AT&T said the rollout will begin this summer with an invitation-only service for DIRECTV Now subscribers. Then in the fall, all DIRECTV Now subscribers, and DIRECTV customers who use the satcaster’s app, will be offered the cloud DVR. (It's unclear when U-verse subscribers will get the cloud DVR.)

The company did not offer any pricing or storage details. However, during the invitation-only stage, DIRECTV Now subscribers will be able to store 100 hours of programming on the cloud.

The cloud DVR will be the first time that DIRECTV Now will offer a recording feature. Rival live streaming services Sling TV, Hulu Live, YouTube TV and PlayStation Vue already sell cloud DVR service.

AT&T said additional features, such as live TV pausing and parental controls, will be added to the cloud DVR later this year. In 2018, the company expects to add user profiles, download and go features, and 4K HDR to its streaming offerings.
