Sony Joins LG With a New OLED TV
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (January 5, 2017) - Sony last night introduced a new Bravia OLED 4K TV, joining LG in selling the OLED model in the United States.

The move should trigger more consumer interest in the OLED set which display experts have billed as offering the best picture on the market because of its vivid colors and deep blacks.

To date, besides LG, TV manufacturers have been leery of the OLED TV due to higher costs for mass production. But LG has proven over the last few years that mass production is possible without requiring a cost-prohibitive price for the set.

Sony said its OLED set, model XBR-A1E, will be available in 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch sizes, but the company did not reveal release dates or pricing information.

LG currently sells a 55-inch OLED 4K TV for around $2,500, which is hundreds of dollars more than a comparably-sized non-OLED TV. So it's likely that Sony's OLED TVs will be pricey as well.

Sony, which is trying to return to the company's roots as an industry innovator, also said last night that its OLED TVs will include a new sound technology called Acoustic Surface. Rather than the sound coming from traditional side speakers, it will come from the screen itself.

The company also revealed last night that it will introduce its first 4K Blu-ray player for consumers in the United States. The unit, model XBP-X800, is expected to be launched in the spring. No pricing details were announced.
